March 31, Making Herbal Salves
Making salves a few days ago…How do you make a salve, you might be wondering. Well, I’ll tell you. I begin my process by creating the herbal oil infusion. I use Certified Organic Olive Oil as my base to begin. My herbs are from our labyrinth healing garden, wild-crafted locally or Certified Organic. My preference and first choice of course is the local and herbs that I grow. Depending on the season, the herbs I use are either freshly picked or dried.
Next I use my recipe of herbs along with the oils. Currently I use an old crock pot; why an old one you ask? This is because the temperature on an old one is ‘broken’ so it heats at a lower temperature, which is what you want. I’m in the process of purchasing a more industrial crock with an actual temperature thermometer. An upgrade of equipment is a must for me! But for now I use what I have and it works well!
As you see in the photos, this deliciously green salve invites you to try it! Arnica, St. John’s Wort, Comfrey, Calendula and Lavender are all allies in this concoction, which I call “Dear Friend”. It’s a dear friend when you put it on your aches and pains as it provides relief from the muscular and aching tension from being out in your garden, building projects, biking, running, sitting at the computer, or whatever act you do that causes a little tightness in your body. “Dear Friend” is one of my best sellers; someone in the Midwest ordered a case of it not too long ago. After the herbal oil infusion is ready, I strain/decant the herbs from the oil and add natural beeswax. Heat these two ingredients at a low temperature just enough to melt the beeswax. Then turn off the heat, add the Vitamin E Oil and Pure essential oils, mix and pour. Allow the salve to cool and harden, cap and label and the salves are ready to go! All in a days work! I love my work!!
Enjoy this sunny day! I hope you are able to get out into the sunshine for that needed Vitamin D!!
