March 27, Goats
Venus and Tilly are about to have babies; their kids are due on April 10th. They are showing in a way that I didn’t think that they would. They don’t seem any bigger to me (I guess one might consider us to have ‘fat’ goats). Their weight has seemed to move to other locations.
You may or may not see in their photos, they are carrying their babies up higher closer to their rumen/stomach areas. As the time gets closer to delivery, they will drop the babies lower in their bodies, much like many human mama’s about to deliver. Other signs that they are closer will be observing them ‘paw’ more with their hooves, and seeing a mucus-like substance from behind.
Each day as I kneel down in back of Venus, our feisty black daughter wanting to be Queen over her mom, I hear her “Baaaaah”; “What is she doing looking at me so intensely everyday?” I imagine her saying to me. My watching them like a hawk has become a normal part of my daily routine morning and night over the last few weeks. Their hormones have definitely been up and down, their moods and behaviors towards me change from happy and sweet to grumpy and aloof.
Last week when we were off-island, we purchased the ‘kid colostrum’ formula, and large milking bottles and nipples, just in case we need them after delivery for whatever reason. I like to plan for things just in case. So I’ll keep you posted on what happens in the next few weeks.
